Apple's iPhone 18 Pro — officially unveiled at the 'Surprise and Shine' keynote, September 9, 2026

September 9, 2026 will be remembered as the day Apple changed — not just its product lineup, but itself. The "Surprise and Shine" keynote at Apple Park delivered on every rumor and then some: a new iPhone Pro generation, Apple's first-ever foldable device, and the quiet but consequential arrival of a new CEO at the podium. Here is everything that was announced, with the numbers that matter.

👤 John Ternus Opens His First Keynote

Tim Cook appeared on screen to introduce John Ternus — Apple's longtime hardware engineering chief and now its CEO — before stepping back into his new role as Executive Chairman. The transition was measured, deliberate, and unmistakably symbolic. Ternus came across as technical, confident, and grounded. His opening set the tone for a keynote that prioritized substance over spectacle. This is Apple, chapter two.

📱 iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max — The Camera Becomes a System

The iPhone 18 Pro is the clearest articulation yet of Apple's thesis: the smartphone camera is not a feature, it is the product. The headline addition is a Variable Aperture main camera — a first for any iPhone. The lens mechanically adjusts between f/1.6 and f/2.8, giving photographers native depth-of-field control. Real bokeh, not computational simulation.

The A20 Pro chip (2nm TSMC process) delivers an 18% CPU speed gain and 30% better power efficiency over A19 Pro. Dynamic Island has been redesigned — 35% smaller — returning more usable screen real estate without removing the feature. The Pro Max ships with a 5,567mAh battery, the largest ever in an iPhone.

🪄 iPhone Duo — Apple's First Foldable, Done Right

The biggest surprise in "Surprise and Shine" wasn't a rumor — it was the execution. iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable smartphone, arrived with a level of polish that the category has never seen before. A 5.4-inch outer display folds open to a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR screen (4:3, iPad mini proportions). The titanium hinge achieves a closed thickness of 5.2mm — thinner than many bar-form flagships.

Apple solved what has plagued every other foldable: the crease, the hinge durability, and the software that doesn't know what to do with the extra space. The inner display's multitasking gestures are native, not ported. iPadOS-level split view and Stage Manager work out of the box. The device carries IP68 — the highest rating for any foldable on the market.

Apple Watch Series 12 (S11 chip) delivers the most medically capable consumer smartwatch yet. Blood pressure monitoring with hypertension alerts is now FDA-cleared and shipping. Heart rate is now sampled every 5 seconds — 60× more frequent than Series 11. The new Readiness Score synthesizes sleep, HRV, and activity data into a single 0–10 daily index.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 improves on an already excellent platform with enhanced multi-sport tracking and 84-hour battery in Low Power Mode. Both models ship September 18.

🎵 AirPods 5 — H3 Chip, Real Upgrade

AirPods 5 ships in two configurations. The standard version at $129 includes Active Noise Cancellation — a category Apple previously charged $179 for. The wireless charging variant at $149 adds a long-stem design and touch-sensitive volume sliding on the stem. Both run the new H3 chip with lower latency and more adaptive spatial audio. For users on AirPods 3 or older, this is a clear upgrade. For AirPods Pro 2 users, the gap has narrowed significantly.

🤖 Apple Intelligence 2.0 — The Platform Beneath Everything

Every device announced today runs Apple Intelligence 2.0. The new generation processes significantly more complex tasks on-device — language understanding, vision analysis, cross-app reasoning — with a faster Private Cloud Compute fallback for heavier operations. The most meaningful improvement is context retention: Apple Intelligence now maintains awareness across longer conversational threads without losing track of earlier inputs. iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate ship September 14.

🔮 What Wasn't There

Standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 were not announced. Analyst consensus now points to a Spring 2027 event. If you are waiting for the base model, that decision comes later.

⚡ What This Means for Accessories

Every major iPhone redesign reshapes the accessory world. The iPhone 18 Pro's new chassis, updated camera module placement, and distinct color palette — Burgundy and Glacier especially — mean a new generation of precision-engineered cases. The iPhone Duo's foldable form factor is an entirely new design challenge: hinge access, inner screen protection, materials that don't add bulk to a 5.2mm device.

At WiWU, we have been engineering ahead of today's announcements. Our iPhone 18 Pro accessory lineup — cases, MagSafe power banks, GaN chargers, and cables — is ready for launch day, September 18. iPhone Duo accessories are in development. Whether you are upgrading to the 18 Pro for its camera system or stretching to the Duo for the foldable experience, we have you covered.
